Honore Family Plot

Eh la bas y’all! In addition to our ongoing series of historical and genealogical information, we will occasionally post pictures of the final resting places of our ancestors as we travel to cemeteries across the state and the Gulf Coast. You never know, we might come across one of your relatives!

Our first post is the Honore Family plot in Saint Louis Cemetery No. 3 in New Orleans. This Honore family has roots in Pointe Coupee Parish but migrated to New Orleans in the late nineteenth century. The marker on this plot bears both French and English inscriptions and dates back to at least 1895. Among those buried here are:

Joseph Honore (1833-1907); Emesie Chesse Honore (1843-1931); Marie H. Decuir (1871-1895); Josephine Honore Haydel (1881-1972); Justine Honore Saulet (1888-1967); Lawrence A. Honore (1910-1961); Curtis M. Haydel (1910-1937); George E. Jacobs (?-1951).

  1. Great post. The Honore’s from this family line have been in and around New Orleans since the early 1700’s. The first born in the lineage is Catiche D’etrean.

    • Greetings! Wow! I am a grandchild (Many greats) of Melanie Olivier who was the wife of Paul Cheval in New Orleans. She and Justine were each the Godmother of one of their children. In the records at the Sacramental Records of the Archdiocese of New Orleans is the following entry: Louise Eloise Chesse was baptized on February,1825 and born on Jan. 15, 1824, sponsors Severin Saucier and Melanie Olivier (SLC, B34, 190). Can we communicate? I have been trying to learn who their parents were?

    • I am a grand-daughter of Melanie Olivier (Cheval). She was the godmother of Louise Elodie Chesse (one of Justine’s children). I would love to know more about Justine. I think she and my grandmother were sisters.

I would love to know more about the family.

  2. I am looking for a woman named Euphrasie or Euphrasia Honore. All I am finding re: birth is 1800 or 1801 in Pointe Coupe Parish or West Baton Rouge. About 1818 she married Joseph Labat their four (4) children were born in Bay St. Louis, MS; then Shieldsborough. Their children were Adalaide, Amelia, Joseph & Zulma or Zulmay. After Joseph died about 1832, Euphrasia married Pierre Prudeaux and had two (2) children. We cannot find anything on her after 1880, nowhere in area graves, church records etc. I am hoping you can help me if you are related to her.

  3. I am looking for relatives of Jean Antoine (Jean Anthony) Honoré
[born in Paris, FR] who established a keel boat company from Louisville, KY, to NOLA area around 1810.
I have not been able to locate documentation about the boat company, but family lore says he became a millionaire since it was so successful.
His partner may have been Bartalemí Tardiveau also of Louisville.

Also his son, Henry Hamilton Honoré (Louisville until 1855, then Chicago).

    Thank you for your time.

  4. I am trying to find any links in my paternal family tree. I was born on the Caribbean island of Dominica and my grandfather was Aubin Honoré. His father supposedly migrated to the island from the South. We have no other Honorés on the island and I was intrigued to find that my family may have come from Louisiana. I came to North Louisiana on a college scholarship and realized that there were many Honorés in the state

  5. Hi I’m checking on my family tree in New Orleans Are there any related to me in your research?
For instance, Terrence Honore from Trinidad and Tobago or
Louis Honore’ born 1864 or Stephen Alcide Honore born 1889.
    Thank you.

  6. Hi there, I am looking for information about Justine née Oliver and then married Chesse.
She would have been my mums great- great grandmother. Any info about her life or any photos? Thanks

    • Hi Marielle,

Justine Olivier was involved in the life of one of my third great grandmothers. There is a record of them in the St Louis Cathedral files. It appears that they each sponsored one of the other’s children.

I am in the process of researching them. I would love to share the information I receive (when it is sent to me) and see if we can fill in any blanks for each other.

      Hope to hear from you.

      • Hi Barbara
Apologies for not having replied sooner but with the covid pandemic etc it has been a bit crazy. I would love to know more. My mum who is 88 was the daughter of Leonie Chesse who was granddaughter or great granddaughter of Justine olivier

        • Hi! Sorry for this terrible, late response. I had given up on learning more about Justine and Melanie. Not sure if this helps, but I did find a connection in the will of Paul Cheval. When Paul died, the family was trying to find a tutor for Francois Angelin Cheval. They had a family meeting and among the cousins named as a potential tutor was George Herriman. It is written that Justine was first involved with Stephen Herriman and then with the Chess branch. I would be happy to correspond. Hicksb358@gmail.com.

    • I am a descendent of Justine Olivier. I don’t have any pictures though. I have pictures of her daughter, Emesie Chesse, however.

  7. I’m in the thick of research and wondered if there is any possibility of a family relationship between the Ford/Fard family of East Texas and the Honore family. Please let me know, I would really appreciate it. Thanking you in advance.

  8. Thank you for posting. I’m an Honoré descendant via Pointe Coupee Parish. Zacharie Honoré of Pointe Coupee Parish is my ancestor. The same DeCuir couple repeats three times in my family tree in the 1800’s.
