Faces From the Album: Blessed Sacrament Council No. 47 Banquet (1958)

In this installment of our Faces From the Album series, we present this photograph from the Installation Banquet for Blessed Sacrament Council No. 47 of the Knights of Peter Claver, which was held on Sunday, 5 January 1958, in Father Clarke Hall. In addition to installing the council’s officers for the year, certificates were also presented to those members who had twenty-five or more years of service in the Order. Blessed Sacrament Council No. 47 was established in Blessed Sacrament Parish in Uptown New Orleans in 1926, after having been previously organized as Blessed Sacrament Council No. 19 in 1919. Among the founders of the council was veteran educator, Professor Andrew J. Bell, for whom a junior high school in the city was named.

The master of ceremonies for the banquet was Archie W. Arnaud, and the principal speaker was Ernest N. Morial, Editor of The Claverite and future National Advocate, who later was elected Mayor of New Orleans. Also present were Supreme Knight Beverly V. Baranco, DDS, K.S.G., of Baton Rouge, and the National Advocate Alexander P. Tureaud.

The officers for 1958 were Carl V. Duvigneaud, Grand Knight; George S. LeBlanc, Deputy Grand Knight; Sidney Martin, Financial Secretary; V. Richards, Assistant Financial Secretary; Herbert McCollum, Recording Secretary; Melvin P. Duvigneaud, Treasurer; Willie Biagas, Warden; Lloyd Williams, Outer Guard; Dr. Philip G. Wiltz, Physician; Archie W. Arnaud, Lecturer; Frank Kaufman, Maurice Martinez, and Lester J. Arnaud, Board of Trustees; Hiram Workman, Jr., Relief Director; and Rev. Grant Higgins, S.S.J., Chaplain.

The honorees celebrating more than twenty-five years in the Order and their years of service were: Hubert Allain (33); George Allain (33); Archie W. Arnaud (36); George Carrere (35); Oliver Gorman (35); Victor H. Labat, Sr. (33); Maurice Martinez, Sr. (39); Ferdinand Colin (29); Lawrence Young (33); Lester J. Arnaud (31); Willie Biagas (28); Alphonse Dupre (27); Joseph LaCour (29); George S. LeBlanc (33); Louis Washington, Sr. (35); Dr. Philip G. Wiltz (27); and Sterling Marcelin (33).

The ‘chefs’ who was prepared the meal were Lloyd Chambers, Ira Cantrell, and Joseph Jacques, all of Corpus Christi Council No. 60.
